from Jessica: "No, I dont wear all the eyeshadow at once. :) I'm a personal trainer/group fitness instructor by day, so I need a very natural, not 'done' look that'll last through sweat. While I have time most days, sometimes I have to be at the gym by 6, yikes! My other 'job' is dancing for a local sports team, so I need something more dramatic but still sweatproof! I moisturize daily, a neutrogena face lotion with SPF and benefit hope in a tube for my eye area. "
My suggestion is to wear something lightweight, with spf-it's no secret that I love Mercier's tinted moisturizer. It will even you out but be sheer. I always think people should wear the least amount of coverage they can get away with. L'oreal beauty tubes are even better than waterproof mascara-they don't come off until you douse them with warm water, so it will stay on perfectly through your workouts. For your cheeks, Smashbox o glow is so pretty and just plain fun. It goes on clear and morphs into a pretty pink with the warmth of your skin! It also wears forever.
Moving on to eyes= for when you are dancing and need a lil drama-start with a Pixi waterproof liner. (Use a brush; these go on pretty gooey but once you are used to them they are the bomb) smudge upwards from the lashline. Follow with a deep shade from the Kat von D palette. You will get a lot more bang for your buck with these highly pigmented shadows.

Makeup Bag Monday; April
I suppose in some ways this entry is a bit of a cheat in that I have known April for a few years now, have done her makeup many times, and nearly all of her items in her bag were recommended to her by moi. She is one of my studio mates and a dear friend.
Because she follows direction so well, I actually would change very little about her stash, but I would say that she needs to utilize it more. I think she plays it safe a lot and rarely ventures out of her comfort zone. April has very big, beautiful blue eyes and I would love to see her play them up more. Large eyes can pull off dramatic liner or very dark lids without looked heavily made up.
When I do April's makeup, I emphasize her brows more than she does, and I tend to give her a dark smoky lid to make her eyes recede just a touch. I go for coppery shades to pop the blue. I also play up her porcelain skin with peaches on her cheeks-she could definitely stand to use more of her cream cheek color and remember to highlight with her mosaic quad, to warm up her skintone and bring out her bone structure. I would also love to see her experiment with some deeper lip shades for a change-a bright pink or red lip would be so dramatic and beautiful with those eyes. She could also incorporate some bronxer going into summer-I love her fair complexion but a touch of warmth will give her a healthy, natural looking glow.

Cincinnati private makeup lessons/Makeup Bag Monday; Heather
Heather brought in her extensive colllection and I weeded through it into four different categories:
-stuff she wears everyday
-stuff she should pitch
-stuff she never wears but ought to

The above image on the left are her everday items; mainly pretty good, except that NARS Orgasm is way too light and peachy for her skintone. I recommended the cream blush from Maybelline instead; a deeper, rosier hue. Good neutral MAC shadows, great mascaras (she wears all 3 every day-!)MAC moisturecover is an excellent concealer; it is a staple in my kit.
The pic up on the right are things she rarely wears but I would like to see her incorporate.

she spice up the neutrals by wearing more plums and purples. in her headshot above I have a very deep burgundy cream shadow on her lid, but it actually reads very natural on her and gives such a richmess to her big brown eyes.

The cream shadows give her one everday neutral to wear alone or layer other colors(she would like to play with some olive-y greens in her collection) and the deeper wine shade I used. she has some bare monerals but the shade was all wrong so I steered her in the direction of my favorite tinted moisturizer instead. She has great skin that simply needs evening out and spf.

Makeup Bag Monday; Jen D
Today's MBM comes from the owner of Your Wedding by Jen.
Jen has a great assortment here and I love that she lets herself play and have fun with her makeup. She even mixes up her own foundation recipe out of MAC strobe lotion (a luminizer)MAC foundation, and a tinted moisturizer... this gives her a glow and a fairly sheer coverage. She is also using a primer underneath and sets it all with a powder.
She has the fabulous Urban Decay eye shadow primer.
She has been using light purples and turquoise. I recommend trying some of the coppery shades from this kit to pop her green eyes. I recommend she play with a fun cream shadow to experiment with the intensity it can give; a smudge pot can be used on the enteire lid, or just as a liner. Burgundies also can be very striking as well. I also love a shimmery pewter; predominantly gunmetal with an undertone of green.
She favors liquid liners, which I love; she has a black and a purple. She leans toward lining her inner bottom rim with her black pencil. She may want to mix that up and bit and try lightening up that waterline instead to make her eyes look larger-a white or flesh tone on that inner rim gives a bright eyed look for a nice change of pace.
I would love to see her add in a blush; L'ancome "Pret a Plum" is a great shade for her and is really silky and easy to blend.
I also added a luminizing powder to highlight her cheekbones and give her a little warmth.

Makeup bag Monday; Jen G
Jen is another of my former brides and we cross paths more often than I do with most of them. She loves to come see me at events if I am moonlighting at Saks and she is always eager to try new looks and get fresh products. I see a lot of my faves here; someone has been reading my blog ! Lash blast and L'oreal Beauty Tubes are staples for me, and Laura Mercier mulberry lipstain is a classic and really the perfect red for nearly any skintone.
The brow kit looks good-good netral and it seems to have a wax to keep them groomed-? (not sure;I am not that well-versed in Urban Decay products for some reason)

Of course I adore Mercier tinted moisturizer. The thing I really see lacking here is eyeliner, and Jen has beautiful eyes, with or without her glasses. Let's do a liquid liner; would love to see you rock out a slightly retro look with a tick at the end. (think Progressive spokeslady)
Jen struggles with concealer and is always on the hunt for the holy grail. Got one for ya, gurl; Makeup Forever lifting concealer is really pigmented but doesn't settle into fine lines or make you look dry. Another thing she can do is add a highlight to the inner corner of the eye; that draws sparkle to the eye and makes darkness under the eye less noticable.
Jen asked me about the Laura palette; I think it is an excellent chice; they are a great value and have versatile shades, and keeps everything really organized.

Cincinnati makeup artist/Makeup Bag Monday; Reagan
Reagan kindly sent over her goods for my appraisal. I have had the pleasure of doing Reagan's face twice now, for a family shoot and for a Valentine's date with her hubby.
While Reagan has a nice basic set here (AND an eyelash curler-!), she is definitely playing it safe. I would love to see her incorporate some plums to spice up those blah, basic browns, to give her eye color more contrast.
I would also like to see her add a little luminizer to the mix-pop that baby on the tops of the cheekbones, the browbones, the inner corner of the eye-you get a foxy glow that can transform even a busy and sleep deprived mom.
And while a liquid liner is always a classic, why not try a soft smudgy liner pencil once in a while for a very quick (and not messy) route to a smoky eye? I love Pixi from Target-very easy to manipulate in the first few seconds, but once it sets up, it is bulletproof.
I added in a nice basic brush set; Reagan will see a huge difference in her eye makeup when she has great tools.
Lastly, she needs color on her lips! A lipstain will give her a pop of color and last all day.
Wouldn't this make a nice Mother's day gift, hint hint?

Makeup Bag Monday: Ryan
Another of my former brides, AND the sis of one of my besties, Ryan emailed me her goods all the way from Scotland. The new mom of adorable Calum, she adores makeup. But I am betting maybe she does not have as much time for it lately-?
I spy one of my absolute faves up to the left; Benefit creaseless creme shadow in Birthday Suit. Perfect neutral, perfect amount of shimmer. LOVE. Absolutely essential basic.
She could definitely stand to invest in a few decent eyeshadow brushes and pitch the teeny sponge applicators.I adore the new limited edition set by Sonia Kashuk with natural wooden handles, and the little cork clutch is to die for. And a very reasonable price for this quality brush.
Cheers on the lash curler, of course. Looks like she is using the black eyeshadow as a liner-good choice.
I also own the "some kind of gorgeous" in Benefit-I very rarely reach for it though. It is super sheer so doesn't give enough coverage for me; I think it might be best on a naked skin that is basically perfect but needs a touch of evening up. Which would be Ryan, unless she is having post-partum skin trouble, in which case I have precribed Kat Von D concealer for any little spots that could crop up and the inevitable dark circles from late nights with the bebe. You can't go wrong with the cult classic YSL Touche Eclat pen that Ryan already has, but it doesn't give much coverage; it's more of a highlighter pen.
I did not see any cheek color so I added in a cool cream/powder cheek duo from Laura Mercier.
To streamline Ryan's routine, I added in a palette from Mercier as well; this will save time over all those bits and bobs of shadows she has collected, and the spring colors will be great on her. It also has some sheer lip shades as well.
Lastly, I added in a great cream liner set from Stila so that Rye can dabble in her sooty black liner days again. The cobalt color is also really fun, as is the "kitten" color; another of my favorites-more sparkly and champagne than the Benefit one.

Makeup Bag Monday; Jessica
Jessica has rosacea and has found that Aveeno's ultra-calming line works best for her, so I am not going to mess with that; once you find what works, stick with it!
I am impressed with all the lash curlers I am seeing (is it because you all know by now you are getting a smackdown if you don't include them?)
I would love to see an upgrade in Jessica's eye brushes; the shapes don't look terribly useful. I would recommend a good overall eye color brush and a crease color brush to start. And they don't have to be expensive; I happen to think POSH makes pretty nice brushes.
I love Lash Blast mascara.
I am very curious about the new Cover Girl double ended "smoky eye" pencils; she must like them because she has three of them already and they are fairly new to the market. The ads claim that you schmear one shade all around the eye and lid and follow with the second shade and voila-"no makeup artist needed". But clearly the print ad with Drew Barrymore has at least five different colors/products on her eyes. (Just as the mascara ads are employing false lashes, but that's another topic!)But having said that, they do look fun and I adore a creamy shadow.
Jessica admits to being a bit lazy with lip color; she hates the feel of gloss and rarely wears anything. I recommended the Cover Girl lip marker-I have about five of these in my purse and they wear like iron. They leave no discernable texture on your lip but leave a great stain of color on your lips.
Jessica says she often feels washed out. It is very common for people with ruddiness/rosacea to feel very pale once they tone out the redness. But I would recommend setting her foundation and then using a very light bronzer on top. Then follow with a warm, coral-y blush; avoid pinks, because then you are going back and adding that blue based tone.
I also added in a new pressed powder from Laura Mercier. It has a very faint green tint-don't worry; you won't look like an alien!-and this will tone out redness and control shine throughout the day.
I also added in "steely by L'oreal HIP because I know Jessica adores drama on the eyes and this will be so fun for her on the weekends all over her lid, or for day as a liner. It is one of my personal favorites and performs like a $25 cream shadow.

Makeup Bag Monday; Amanda
Amanda is a wedding photographer whom I know mainly through Facebook, but I hope we have the chance to work together very soon!
Her day-to-day routine is similar to mine; she is a work at home mom during the week, photographer on weekends.
She has skin concerns (don't we all?); sensitivity, prone to breakouts, extreme combination type. She commented that she feels foundation only seems to exacerbate the issue.
She did not mention what skincare she is using, but I recommend the starter kit in Patricia Wexler below. Exfoliating regularly and using the salicylic pads will make the pores appear smaller and make her skin look more fresh. It will also make her foundation go on more nicely and wear longer. Her products adress oily skin and adult acne but don't overdry like many systems can.
I also think she needs to incorporate a primer under her foundation; this will help mask any problems with large pores and oil breakthrough, (especially on those long days of shooting weddings)
I do not see a setting powder; if she set her foundation with a puff and a good translucent loose powder she would have a more polished finish plus better longevity.
Love the Hoola bronzer, but she also needs to pop a blush on top to bring out her cheekbones and brighten her face; she has beautiful bone structure.
Of course I applaud the lash curler; it's the quickest non-makeup thing you can do to look refresed and bright-eyed (other than caffeine!)
There is a nice collection of eye colors here, but mainly all neutral.(I see a couple of lonely lavenders back there but i suspect they are largely neglected.) I would love to see Amanda incorporate shades that would provide contrast with her big brown eyes; a sapphire blue eyeliner, or a deep burgundy lid; or a wash of khaki or olive perhaps? (TIP: if busting outta your browns scares you, use color blended into your neutrals to get you used to the idea)
Amanda has gorgeous full lips, so the beigy gloss is a nice choice if you don't want to look like you are "all lips". (There is definitely something to be said for not making too much of a statement with your makeup when you are working a wedding)
I am trying to persuade Amanda to come in a play makeup with me IRL, so we will be sure to post pics of our session!

Makeup Bag Monday; Mandi WEDDING EDITION!
I met with Mandi the other night to give her a lesson on how to do her own wedding makeup. (She is getting married in Alabama and is having trouble finding a makeup artist) She is a dear friend of one of my favorite brides from last year, Kelly. So the diagnosis is a bit different in that I am recommending items she specifically needs for her wedding, not just everday life.
Like our Makeup Bag Monday subject last week, Mandi owns a lot of Prescriptives, a great line that is unfortunately discontinued. Mandi has a ton of wonderful products,but she sheepishly admitted that she uses very little of it. Most of her loose shadows were still sealed! The brushes are good quality. She has a lot of Bare Escentuals; fine for everyday (I am not really a fan of "mineral" foundation in general, but that is another post entirely) but I recommended a liquid foundation for her wedding; it photographs better and provides more flawless coverage. She should definitely wear a primer under the foundation as well; wedding makeup is ALL about durability!
I steered her towards a different undereye concealer; hers is way too yellow for her grey-blue discoloration under her eye; she needs a more salmony-orange color.
She still has her "magic" powder in Prescriptives to set the foundation.
Here is the plan for the eyes.(Mandi's sari will have shades of deep pink/burgundy)
I really like to start out with a creme base for bridal makeup(for longevity) and also when I want to build intensity of color. I chose Benefit's creaseless creme shadow in Stiletto (it is shown below in another shade; I tried without success to find an image of the aubergine shade on the interwebs) This is all over the lid. I used Laura Mercier rose on the browbone, and used Smashbox jetset to line top, bottom, and inside the waterline. In the crease/outer corner, I used one of Mandi's Bare Escentuals-a very deep coppery brown (whose name eludes me)
Mandi will have Kelly apply her individual lashes; I always recommend black adhesive.
Mandi has a lot of beautiful lip colors in her collection; I chose a sparkly burgundy one of hers that was nearly gone, so I selected a new one to replace it.
Of course Mandi should seal the look with Model in a Bottle!
Makeup Bag Monday; Marti
This is really one impressive assortment. Except for the fact that what appears to be her one her favorite lines (Prescriptives) has been discontinued. So she will be needing to find a new brand for her foundation, concealer, and loose powder. I am a big fan of value sets, particularly when you are new to a line and wanting to try out several items. This is such a great deal. The set I chose comes with tinted moisturizer because I don't feel Marti needs foundation everyday; she has really nice skin. This set also has concealer, two great brushes, loose powder, and primer. (Marti had mentioned she wasn't thrilled with the "slippery" feel of the Smashbox)
The Pond's moisturizer...Marti says she has been using it forever. But you know, I just think you should get some active ingredients in your moisturizer, and at the very least, spf. Knowing she prefers a creamy feel, I am going to steer her towards Kiehl's Abbysine cream with spf 23. Diorshow Iconic mascara? Love it to death. Expensive, yes. But wonderful.
The liquid liner? Great; very versatile (you can achieve a tiny, thin line, or a more dramatic thick one)She should buy a black one for evening though; hers is brown.

Makeup Bag Monday; Linda
Today we have a long-distance makeup bag submission, all the way from California! Linda is Alison's mom and she tells me she is in a bit of a rut.
I am going to start with the Dramatically Different Moisturizer. I don't want to hurt the feelings of any loyal Clinique users out there, but DDL is as basic and bare bones as you can get as far as a moisturizer. Using this, particularly when you are over 40, is, in my humble opinion, like using a ten year old computer. You owe it to yourself to use a product with more active ingredients that is going to address issues such as lack or firmness, fine lines, and discoloration. DDL was formulated decades ago, and has seen no upgrades in that time, not even adding sunscreen!
Linda would be much better off investing the Olay Pro line, at the very least, their moisturizer with spf30. This way she is getting antioxidants and firming properties. She can also get their night creme with retinol to address discoloration.
Linda is just using the powder to even out her skintone, reserving a Clinique foundation for special occasions. I would rather see to do a dewier finish, like Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer. This will also give her more spf. She should pitch this blush because she complains it never stays on. I chose a Bobbi Brown creme rouge for her that can also be used on the lips.
The lipstick looks fine.
The under concealer looks fine and she has a ton of it. She has a quickliner in brown and a Chanel liner in navy.I chose a cream liner to use with a small bent brush because i would like to see her phase out the pencils and if she were using the cream i think she would start to have more fun with it-you have the versality of making the line thin, Marilyn Monroe, or smudgy. Blue will make her eyes sparkle more too. Of couse I would love to see her do tight line with Laura's cake liner, in navy, along with a flat liner brush. Alie must have hooked her on the fiberwig mascara., which is fine. Good to see that eyelash curler!
She is using the powder brow filler; she may want to add in a clear brow gel to set that and to groom the brows a bit.
Rather than using that neutral powder shade lash to brow, Linda would be better off with a creamy shadow base; it will give a much smoother look to the lid and will match her skintone better. I chose Laura Mercier in wheat.

Makeup Bag Monday-Amy
Today we have the lovely Amy Scalia of Cincy Chic opening her makeup bag to us.She has a good assortment of brushes, both high-end and low. She has several by POSH(reviewed here) which are an excellent value for your money.
I applaud Amy for having an eyelash curler, but it does look like she is in need of a replacement; they lose their shape after repeated squeezings and just from being tossed around in your bag and drawer. She has a lot of random eyeshadow pallettes but only uses a few from each. My solution is to get a zpalette. Here's what you do if you are a mad scientist type like me: buy a plug-in mug warmer or candle warmer. Put your compact on there for a minute or two. Use a metal nail file to (gently!) pry the pan out once the glue is melted. This handy pallette will hold any shape or size and is totally customizable.
She has a very nice foundation and undereye concealer from Jane Iredale; no issue there.
A bronzer from Arbonne, and two very nifty Stila pencils with three items in one; eye pencil, smudger, and eyeshaow highlighter on a sponge tip. Her blush seems a bit dull to me. My suggestion is a brighter, blue based shade to play up her eyes and pop her pretty cheekbones. she can apply her bronzer first (see our latest vlog, ) and pop the "opera" on her apples. I know ,I sound like a broken record, but she needs Laura Mercier cake liner and flat liner brush to tight-line her upper, inner lash line. Actually, everybody does.
Amy does use individual lashes from Makeup Forever when she is attending an event (which is constantly!) so I was duly impressed by that; those are not easy! Z(Come to think of it, that would make a good future tutorial...)
I also encouraged her to reach for her copper eyeshadows more often for constrast with her green eyes. She also needs a brow pencil to define her arches a bit, and lastly, elf makes a divine cream highlighter, and at $1 a pop, you can afford the whole collection! Use on the inner corners of the eyes, browbones, and tops of cheekbones. Shopping board, below (cause I'm fancy like that.)

New weekly feature; Makeup Bag Mondays!
Last Wednesday I had the pleasure of lunch with Alison Wenstrup, wedding planner extraordinaire.On a whim, I asked her to bring her core products that she uses so I could take a peek. She and Tine Hofmann and I had so much fun with this that I am making it a new feature. I root through your stuff and tell you what to keep and what to chuck.
Overall, I was very impressed with Alison's stuff; however, she doesn't actually use most of it.
First off, the Caudalie moisturizer. Alie and Tine are both so flippin' passionate about this product, it made me want to dash over to Sephora right then and there. I have not personally tried their products but have heard only good things. This is Alie's splurge because she has very dry skin. But with what she invests in skincare, she saves in foundation. She rarely ever wears any makeup on her face. She owns the Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer, at my urging, but rarely ever wears it. I say that's okay, because she has a very pretty complexion. She uses it only for when she really needs to look perfect. She also hardly uses the Mercier concealer (cool product; has the loose powder underneath) but she doesn't have particularly dark circles either. (why do I like her so much, anyway?)
She has the Benefit dandelion powder-(more fun than functional, but that's okay.) It has a pink tint to it, so it's nice for those sallow days. She owns NARS Orgasm blush, but again, rarely uses it. I do want her to wear blush. It would really wake up her face, pop her cheekbones, and warm her up a bit.
She has two mascaras; Fiberwig (a "tubing" style mascara with a cult following) and Voluminous by l'oreal. She finds the L'oreal smudges under her eyes, even though it's waterproof. The tubing one should not give her that issue, but I think when she's done with it she should buy L'oreal's beauty tubes instead and pocket the difference.
There's a Hard Candy shadow quad, rarely used. Pretty neutral in shade but too sparkly IMHO. Save it for evening.
Then a NARS duo that is very pretty and she should use daily. (but doesn't)
MAC dazzleglass in "baby sparks", chosen by me on a shopping trip, so of course I deem it perfect. Mercier lipstick in "courtisane"-a perfect shimmery sheer rose.
The only thing Alie is sorely lacking is eyeliner. She needs to get Laura Mercier cakeliner in Mahogany and a flat liner brush and use it to tight liner her top lashes, everyday. STAT. That is my diagnosis of her makeup routine.
